  • In a pressure cooker or a large pot, combine the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, salt, and chopped tomato.
  • If using a pressure cooker, cook for 3-4 whistles. If using a pot, bring to a boil and then simmer for 25-30 minutes until the dal is soft and fully cooked.
  • Once cooked, mash the dal lightly with the back of a spoon to achieve a smooth consistency. Set aside.
